<div class="tex2jax_process">Commutative Algebra, the study of commutative rings and their modules, has a long and prestigious history. An entirely new dimension opened up when Bruno Buchberger discovered an algorithm to compute Gröbner bases, namely the possibility to symbolically calculate with these objects. In this school we start by introducing the participants to the basics of the theory. Then we branch out and convey a wide range of applications that these fundamental techniques have produced in the last decades.

These lectures are intended for Mathematicians interested in the applications of stochatic methods to modern finance. They will also allow practitioners from financial institutions and companies operating in ASEAN countries to get in touch with European researchers in the subject. This School is part of the Imamis program : we especially encourage people involved in this program or researchers, teachers, or practitioners who want to contribute to the dissemination of Imamis to apply and ask for support both from their home institution and from Cimpa/Imamis.

The aim of the School is to introduce mathematicians from developing countries to some fundamental techniques and recent developments in Commutative Algebra and to promote the collaboration between mathematicians of different developing and developed countries.

Braid groups are a key tool in several parts of algebra, geometry and topology. Representative examples include the theory of quantum groups, hyperplane arrangements and knot theory. The school will introduce participating students to some important new developments in each of these very active areas of mathematics, focusing on the unifying role of braid group. In adopting this approach, we aim to present a larger picture of mathematics to students and counteract a trend towards early specialization and exclusive focus on one narrow research topic.
