Summary: The main emphasis was on interesting and advanced examples of symmetry groups from geometry. Many of the examples were discussed directly with the students. The rest of the course will be taught by prof. Imran Anwar (LUMS) and prof. Peter Stevenhagen (Leiden). The material of the course is based on detailed lecture notes of an algebra course by prof. Stevenhagen. The emphasis was in particular on discussion of examples and exercises in class, which worked very well. The students are from Pakistan and Algeria. The background of the students is good, and most of them had already seen some basic concepts from algebra. The students were always very engaging during lectures and tutorials. The level is comparable with good 3rd year undergraduate students in Italy. The students were asked to discuss and work on excercises in the tutorials and then were voluntarily asked to present their solutions at the board to the others. This worked very well, and I was very impressed about their enthusiasm and engagement. A first exam will be given on September 27. Further homework assignments and exams are planned.
