Summary: Students were introduced to modeling of infectious diseases. Various models were presented and analyzed: SI, SIS, SIR, SLIR (with demography, treatment, prophylaxis measures) models, group models, age-structured, diffusion models, metapopulation models. Students were provided basic background information on certain diseases (tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, hepatitis, malaria...) and independently developed their own model to describe a given scenario. They were also introduced to the concepts of disease free equilibrium, endemic equilibrium, basis reproduction number, and applied results in dynamical systems to study the local and global stability of equilibria.
